Matthew 22:15-21 -29th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year A

Getting on with it.

My nan was the original Scouse stoic. Her motto in life was something like, “If you don’t like it, change it. If you can’t change it, get on with it.” No “what ifs.” Just get on with the business of living.

Jesus certainly has far better things to do than play “what if?” with the Pharisees — but here we are. They surround Him with a question designed not to enlighten but to entangle. A trap disguised as a puzzle.

They’ve lived under Caesar’s regime for decades. Whatever they ought to have done to preserve their integrity, they’ve already made their compromises. Their coins bear Caesar’s face; their daily lives run on Caesar’s terms. Yet suddenly they want to play politics with Jesus — hoping His integrity will condemn Him.

They will condemn Him anyway.

And today… the world still seems full of dissatisfaction and cynicism. As my nan’s granddaughter, this feels uncomfortable, even unnatural. Recently my sanity was questioned as I was asked to explain why I believed in a “fairy‑tale sky god.” In past years I might have tried everything to justify my faith. Today, watching Jesus slip free of the Pharisees’ entanglement, I decided to give all that to God — and simply carry on getting on with it..
